SYDNEY PIZZA

Pompei’s, 126-130 Roscoe Street, Bondi Beach +61 2 9365 1233
With its Neapolitan style woodfire pizzas, Pompei’s stands out by a mile against the many average pizza places that now exist in Bondi, and the rest of Sydney. A great place for a post-beach pizza and gelato.

Pizza Mario
, Shop 9, 417-421 Bourke Street, Surry Hills +61 2 9332 3633
Another one of Sydney’s finest Italian style pizzas. At this place it’s alla bout the base. They’ve even got a list of ‘Pizza Discipline’ rules for creating the perfect pizza.

Hugos Bar Pizza, 33 Bayswater Road, Kings Cross +61 2 9332 1227
Winner of the Best Pizza in Australia award since 2005. Thin crust pizza with a good mixture of traditional and more adventurous toppings. They’re all good, but the chilli prawn and salsa verde pizza is one of the best.

Hugos Manly
, Shop 1, Manly Wharf, East Esplanade, Manly +61 2 8116 8555
Same great pizza in another great location. Situated right on the tip of Manly wharf, you can get the ferry over from the city solely for a Hugos visit. Eating here at sunset is a treat.

La Disfida, 109 Ramsay Street, Haberfield +61 2 9798 8299
Crispy, thin crust pizza bases with just the right amount of blistering. Using traditional Italian toppings in minimal amounts, La Disfida produces just about the perfect pizza. Get a serve of the roasted chestnuts too.

Lucio’s Pizzeria
, 248 Palmer Street, Darlinghurst +61 2 9332 3766
Opened by Naples born chef, Lucio De Falco, this cozy little restaurant produces authentic Italian pizzas baked in a rustic woodfire oven. Bubbly, wonky bases cooked to perfection, with a nice selection of Italian cheeses. Try the signature dish, Pizza Lucio; half margherita pizza, half ricotta and ham calzone.

Rosso Pomodoro
, 91/24 Buchanan Street, Balmain +61 2 9555 5924
Yet another rival for the best Napoli style pizza in Sydney, and another with a strict code of pizza making. The ‘rules’ here include no half and half, no ‘ham e pineapple’, only Italian Mozarella and toppings, and the pizza must be cooked straight on the stone.

Napoli
In Bocca
, 73 Dalhousie Street, Haberfield +61 2 9798 4096
This place is well worth the trip to Haberfield. A casual, daggy old Italian style eatery with fast service and excellent pizzas. Try the mussels too.
