GET LECTURED

Following on from the MF Doom – Redbull Music Academy talks, we’ll now bring you various lectures and learnings from the original tastemaker from New Orleans, Cash Money Records’ Mannie Fresh. If you are at all inclined to rap music, you will enjoy this immensely. Mannie takes you through the many pitfalls of his career, all the while telling the most craziest tales about life in the hood pre and post Hurricane Katrina. Then over to Houston Texas, to explore the myth of screw music and the influences DJ Screw had on the whole south of America. Also thrown into the mix is a bit of garage/drum n’n bass learnings from super producer Goldie on TED talks. Then the man behind shaping the all important sound of Jay-Z, Young Guru, the mastermind engineer. The music stylings of AraabMUZIK. We also take a look back on the late and super great DJ Mehdi with A-Trak, may he rest in beats!

You can never stop learning from and evolving your music tastes so make this a part of your essential viewing and tune in on a wavelength you might not have known existed.

Mannie Fresh (Producer for Cash Money Records) - Redbull Music Academy Lectures – Madrid 2011

With a record catalog long enough to fill an encyclopedia, Mannie Fresh has basically been the sound of New Orleans hip hop for the past 25 years: producing hits for Nola staples like Lil Wayne, Juvenile, BG, Big Tymers, and bounce queen Cheeky Blakk among others. In addition, his marching drum snare rolls and 808-heavy production trademarks have been picked up on and incorporated in the dirty south canon at large. In this lecture, hosted by Cocaineblunts’ Andrew Noz, he touches on everything from his humble beginnings with local MC, Gregory D, to the Cash Money heydays, and his more recent approach to DJing and production.

VBS.tv presents ‘Music World’ – Screwed in Houston

Follow along as we head south to the Third Coast to groove on one of the most original rap scenes ever realized. Houston is a city defined by its geography—low and slow, hot and hard, bayous and parking lots spreading for endless flat suburban miles. But a lack of citywide zoning creates pockets of distinct communities within Houston’s sprawl, and in these unofficially cordoned-off neighborhoods, Dirty Southern rap was born.

Young Guru – Redbull Music Academy Lectures – Madrid 2011

Gimel “Young Guru” Keaton is Jay-Z’s people. When the rap-conquering emcee and world-conquering mogul steps into the booth (as he continues to do, despite frequent retirement threats), Young Guru is outside, at the board, making sure Hova sounds good. Since 1999 — a staggering twelve years — this has been how it’s done. Along the way, Guru has recorded pretty much every other A-list rapper. Some say he has the Midas touch.

Goldie – TEDxObserver – “How art and music saved my life.”

Proof that Drum ‘n’ Bass is maturing, Goldie takes you on a ride through his childhood memories and how it shaped him into the music man he is today.

A visual lecture of sorts – araabMUZIK MPC sessions, kick back and be in awe
