JOHN GOURLEY OF PORTUGAL
We asked lead singer/guitarist/songwriter, John Gourley of Portugal. The Man his Top 5 albums, being it a tough question, he gave us four. (the last one is always too hard).
1. PINK FLOYD
Dark Side of the Moon has got to be number one. Because that is just ONE TRACK. That is a solid piece of music. Concept albums have to be solid in that way.
2. BEATLES
Abbey Road which is basically a continuous piece of music, the flow’s right, it’s an amazing album. To follow that up with: Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots is AMAZING.
3. Wu-Tang Clan
36 Chambers and I will give you a track just for the sake of giving you a single track and it’s ‘Method Man’, just because that song was playing on this late night video channel that was playing in Alaska and it was the first thing I ever saw from Wu-Tang and I pretty much fell in love, in 7th grade or whatever grade I was in. Because I was like, this is soul, this is R&B, this is rock and roll, it’s punk rock, it’s street, but it’s also this nerdy concept; his delivery was so amazing.
4. NINE INCH NAILS
Downward Spiral by Nine-Inch-Nails, which is another one of these really great concept records that doesn’t get the respect that it deserves as a timeless album. It’s so easy to pass off industrial music as this fad of the 90s. I mean, this album is just invaluable to concept album history. And just like where it fits, that’s just up there. It’s one of the best concept albums of all time. Obviously Dark Side of the Moon and Abbey Road those are above it, BUT, Downward Spiral is just the perfect record for just being an angry student! It’s just really great tones; cold, foreign, really great tones.
