DROP OUT ORCHESTRA’S SWEDISH EATS AND BEATS

We caught up with Swede super trio, Drop Out Orchestra, consisting of a music teacher, studio engineer and music tech writer. Little is known regarding the identity of the mysterious Dropouts, they let their music take the focus rather then their identities. The Dropouts have had some major releases, including ‘International Track’ which samples Daft Punk being featured as BBC 1’s Essential tune of the week on Pete Tong’s radio show as well as topping Juno charts and receiving massive praise from DJs worldwide.

The troupe has also completed remixes for acts such as Paul Weller, Flight Facilities, Mario Basonov and Arthur’s Landing. In addition to the above, the Dropouts have reworked some of pop music’s most iconic figures, Rick Astley, Robyn, Craig David, The Ramones and Diana Ross to name a few. With strong support from the likes of Erol Alkan, Aeroplane, Greg Wilson, Jaymo & Andy George (BBC Radio 1), The Magician, Fatboy Slim, Tronik Youth, Mylo, Chris Coco, Annie Mac (BBC Radio 1), Classixx, Laidback Luke and Disjokke they are one of the most hyped names in the disco scene.

Drop Out Orchestra have performed across Europe, blending a live bass player with an intense mix of unique edits, loops and acapellas that is sure to see them please crowds on their first Australian tour in 2012!

We asked them what their favourite beats and eats are in their hometown of Lund, in Sweden. If you find yourself there and are vegetarian inclined, be sure to check them out.

5 SWEDISH BEATS:

Rolf Wikström – Solidaritet (1978)
Funky political music… we love it! Of course we had to cut it up a bit.

Hansson De Wolfe United – Existensmaximum (1981)
One of very few cool disco songs in Swedish. We covered it, but as an instrumental.

Doris  - Did You Give The World Some Love Today Baby (1970)
One of the (VERY few) lost great Swedish albums. Nobody bought it when it came out, and Doris didn’t do much after this one record, but it’s fantastic.

Electric Banana Band – Singe Linge Lisco Disco (1981)
EBB is a joke band, and terribly unfunny. Yet this song is so great. The musicians involved are something else, a lot of them were in ABBA’s studio band, and again we felt we had to make an edit. We play a mash-up of this and ‘Crave You’ by The Flight Facilities at almost every gig we play.

Nürnberg 47 – Hundarna Brinner (1983)
“The dogs are burning”. Yes, that’s what it means. Taken from the soundtrack of one of the most embarrassing films ever produced in this country. Still, can’t knock the track. We will edit it, but I SO wish they’d left out the stupid logan strings.

5 SWEDISH EATS:

Govindas, Lund
No nonsense self service vegetarian restaurant. What I hate about being a vegetarian is that a lot of people think you’re some sort of health freak. I’m not, and I go to Govindas for their huge plates and massive portions.

The Bishop’s Arms, Lund
They make a fantastic veggie burger, and they have the best beer selection in our home town. We drink a lot of beer. IPA preferred, but anything goes really.

Viggo’s, Lund
Our local. Viggo’s happens to be next to the train station, so it’s a natural first stop for us when we come back from gigs. They do a terrible veggie burger but there’s nothing wrong with their Jack Daniel’s.

Falafelkungen, Lund
Sometimes our closest big city, Malmo, think they do more and better falafels than the rest of Sweden. That’s not true. Falafelkungen (“The Falafel King”) in Lund was not only the first place to serve falafel in Sweden, they’re also the best, still.

The Old Bull, Lund
Useless for vegetarians but Inko claims the food is decent. We usually meet up in the Bull before we go away on gigs, and the only reason is because they have pretty good beer (ESB and London Pride) available at 11 in the morning.

Check out Drop Out Orchestraat Bowler Bar, Ivy Pool and Circus for what should be a very interesting and fun set from the troupe.
