HAMBURG HANGOUTS BY DIGITALISM
The boys from Digitalism share their favourite places in Hamburg to eat, drink, dance, and watch the stars.
Golden, Lüneburger Tor 8 +49 40 77 42 46
Run by Mr. Wong, this is THE VERY BEST Szechuan Chinese we’ve been to in Europe. We usually go there every week at least. Order from the “Special menu” which will get you the real stuff. Make sure to try the Green Beans, Gung Bao Chicken, Fish-in-Water or tell them to bring you anything they like. Mr Wong will seriously stuff you up!
Broderson, Rothenbaumchaussee 46 +49 40 45 81 19
This restaurant serves typical Hamburg/German cuisine and it’s all really good. Anyone traveling through the North of Germany should try this out to get an idea of what the original food is like. Sometimes we meet here for lunch with the Hamburg DJ Mafia and talk gossip.
Alsterperle, Eduard-Rhein-Ufer 1 +49 22 74 82 73
This is one of the best spots in town to watch the city and sunsets. It’s located right on the lake which lies in the very center of the city, and from here you have a brilliant view. In summer hundreds of people are BBQ-ing around the area and you can order drinks and small things to eat.
Molotow, Spielbudenplatz 5 +49 40 43 01 110
A real institution in Hamburg. It’s an underground live venue that brings out all the bands before they get massive. It’s only holds 200 pax or even less. They staged the first ever concert of The Hives and we’ve seen Steph from Soulwax DJing a warmup for LCD Sound System there many years ago. It’s in the red-light district and pretty left-field, so drinks are really cheap (2 € for a beer – not bad?)
Ego, Talstraße 9
This club was opened only last year by some friends and it’s the perfect size for an intimate German style club night. It’s on a small street off the famous Reeperbahn which is less busy, and they host lots of good parties there.
Baalsaal, Reeperbahn 25 +49 40 94 79 32 95
Located directly on the Reeperbahn (“The Strip”, a MUST-go bit of Hamburg!). It’s won a couple of awards recently for the venue and programming. They’ve got a brilliant colour-screens-dancefloor and the staff are lovely.
Planetarium, Hindenburgstraße 1b +49 40 42 88 65 20
We’ve not actually been IN there since school, but this is a signature landmark in Hamburg. This huge ex-water-tower is located in the heart of the “Stadtpark” which is our Central Park, overlooking a vast green where people play sports or BBQ in summer. You have a really good view from the top, and if you want, you can attend shows there that show you the latest discoveries of the universe with high-tech gear. Back then, when they projected the sunset onto the ceiling, they played Dark Side Of The Moon by Pink Floyd.
Hafen City, Osakaallee 11 +49 40 37 47 26 0
The newest area in the heart of the city, right by the river Elbe. HafenCity is the updated Warehouse District, and the city is turning it into a new residential area. You should check out all the old houses. They’re also building the Hamburg Philharmonic House, which will be our Opera House, on top of an ex-warehouse on the tip of the land, and it’ll be huge. Architecture and the progress is pretty cool.
Golden Pudel Klub, St. Pauli Fischmarkt 27 +49 40 31 97 99 30
This tiny venue is right at the river embankment and is very indie. It’s really tiny, but you will have the craziest nights in there. Drinks are cheap and you end up drinking LOTS! One cold Sunday night, we ended up watching Princess Superstar DJ with a Japanese guy who was MC-ing. She’d just picked him out of the crowd, put a big furry hat on his head and told him to freak out with words like “ar ar ar ar” and “yayayayayaaaaa!”
