ANNALISE BRAAKENSIEK’S VEGETARIAN SYDNEY

Bodhi2-4 College Street, Sydney +61 2 9360 2523 (see map)
Bodhi is my absolute favourite vegan restaurant. Their Yum Cha is all-time, and its not only insanely delicious, but located in a beautiful outdoor setting at Phillip and Cook Park. You can leisurely indulge your taste buds for hours whilst swilling delicious organic, vegan and biodynamic wines. I recommend all the steamed dumplings, the spicy noodles (tom yum flavour) and curry puffs to name a few. Afterwards I recommend a walk to the national art gallery, then mosey on through the botanical gardens down to the Sydney Harbour and on to the MCA if you have it in you. Certainly one of my favorite ways to pass the day.

Green Gourmet
115-117 Kings Street, Newtown +61 2 9519 5330 (see map)
Another vegan heaven – like Bodhi they do not use meat, dairy products, onions or garlic in cooking however they do use MSG so be mindful (I order a la cart as the buffet has MSG) I especially love the sang choy bao and soy based ice creams but everything is delicious and they have an incredible array of mock meat dishes. What is also fabulous is next door – the Vegan Choice Grocery where you will find both fresh and frozen vegan and vegetarian food, vegan cheese and vegan cream! Mmmmm… oh, and they deliver!

Ichibanboshi, 2/500 George Street, Sydney (see map) +61 2 9262 7677 – Shop 1 / 171-173 Oxford Street, Bondi Junction +61 2 9369 3980 (see map)
This is not a vegetarian restaurant however they make fantastic vegetarian and vegan dishes. I have been eating Nomu’s creations at Ichibanboshi since I returned from living in Tokyo when I was 18! Uber authentic, cheap and cheerful ramen house. I eat there at least twice a week and even have a dish named after me – The “Annalise special” which is a generous bowl of negi miso soup (or you can get vegan soy base) heaped with steamed mixed Asian veggies and four pieces of tempura tofu, shredded leak and chilli sauce.  Oishi kata ne!

The Suveran244 Oxford Street, Bondi Junction +61 2 9369 4040 (see map)
The Suveran is a cute, bustly, hippie café, all their food is is sugar, gluten, dairy, flour, wheat, yeast, grain free and they only use neutral or alkaline forming foods. It’s not vegetarian, although most of the food is vegan, they do serve organic free range meat. Pete My Love the owner is an absolute world of information on all things herbal/organic/environmental, an absolute gem of a soul. Perfect place for a coconut water stop, brunch, lunch or a quick bite. Their salad plates are divine, blueberry sprouted bread is off the hook and I am totally addicted to their Turmcash (nut spread with turmeric) and their assorted deserty-treats (vegan rocky road, cherry ripe etc). Pete also has a shop next door for the cheapest organic fresh produce, legumes and herbs and spices.

The Healthy Chef, 17 Avalon Parade, Avalon +61 2 9973 3233 (see map)
If you are going to make a trip up to the beautiful northern beaches, be sure to stop in for breakfast or lunch at the Healthy Chef. Specialising in low carbs and low GI, gluten and wheat free and a wide selection of vegan and vegetarian food.

IKU2/96 Glenayr Ave, Bondi Beach (see map) +61 2 9130 4301 - 62 Oxford Street, Darlinghurst +61 2 9360 5351 (see map)
The fact that they have been around for 20 years means that they are doing something right! Iku is humble, yummy, clean vegan nosh. All food is free from genetic modification and their salad dressing is worth a trip alone! They also have the best vegan deserts and rice cream!

Great post Annalise, Thank you… It is interesting that despite being the largest city in the country Sydney has such a small number of meat free restaurants… (I know this list is not exhaustive)…May the city of Sydney catch up sooner than later and can grasp some of LA’s food attitude (fooditude).
